What to Know Before You Buy a Ford Super Duty
The Ford Super Duty® is Ford's heavy-duty pickup, sold as the F-250, F-350 and F-450. Each comes in five trims (XL, XLT, Lariat®, King Ranch® and Platinum®), so the first decision is not the trim. It is how much you need to tow and haul.
F-250 is the single-rear-wheel starting point and the most popular Super Duty. F-350 adds higher weight ratings and is available with single or dual rear wheels. F-450 is dual-rear-wheel only and comes standard with the diesel, which is what unlocks the 40,000-pound gooseneck rating. [2]
Gas or diesel is the second decision. For 2027, the 7.3L gas V8 is standard on every F-250 and F-350, and the 6.7L High-Output Power Stroke® turbo diesel is available on both and standard on F-450. [4]
Around Rising Sun, a Super Duty usually has a specific job: a gooseneck horse trailer headed to Fair Hill, a livestock or equipment trailer on a Cecil or Chester County farm, a boat going to the Susquehanna, or a contractor's truck that runs I-95 every day. Tell us the job and the trailer, and we'll narrow the configuration from there.

Browse current Ford Super Duty® inventory at Ourisman Tri-State Ford, including F-250 and F-350 single-rear-wheel pickups and F-450 and F-550 dual-rear-wheel models. Available trucks vary by cab, bed length, engine, drivetrain, axle ratio and package as they arrive and sell.
Super Duty trucks are configured for the work they do, so the exact build matters more than on most vehicles. The same F-250 can be rated very differently for towing depending on engine, axle ratio and cab. If you need a specific setup, such as a diesel Crew Cab with an 8-foot box, a gooseneck prep package or a Tremor®, contact our team about what is in stock and in transit.

Gas vs. Diesel: Which Super Duty Engine Do You Need?
7.3L gas V8. Standard on every F-250 and F-350, producing 420 horsepower and 445 lb.-ft. of torque. It tows up to 22,500 pounds and carries the Super Duty's highest payload rating, up to 7,900 pounds, because the gas engine weighs less than the diesel. It runs on regular 87-octane fuel and costs less up front. [2] [3] [4]
6.7L High-Output Power Stroke® turbo diesel. Standard on F-450 and available on every model, producing 500 horsepower and 1,200 lb.-ft. of torque at just 1,600 rpm. It is the engine behind the 40,000-pound gooseneck rating, and it adds diesel exhaust braking for better control on long downhill grades with a load. [2] [4]
The simple answer: if your heaviest trailer is under about 15,000 pounds and you mostly haul in the bed, the gas V8 is usually the better value. If you pull a big gooseneck or fifth wheel regularly, run long highway miles loaded, or want the longest powertrain coverage, the diesel earns its price.
Both engines use a TorqShift® 10-speed automatic with Normal, Eco, Slippery, Tow/Haul and Off-Road or Trail drive modes.

Super Duty Towing and Payload, Explained
The 40,000-pound headline number is real, but it applies to one specific configuration: a diesel F-450 with the High-Capacity Gooseneck Tow Package. Towing ratings change with the hitch, engine, axle ratio, cab, bed, drivetrain and single or dual rear wheels, so the right question is not "how much can a Super Duty tow" but "how much can this truck tow." [2]
By hitch type, the maximum available ratings are 40,000 pounds gooseneck, 35,000 pounds fifth wheel and 30,000 pounds conventional. By engine, the 7.3L gas tops out at 22,500 pounds and the 6.7L diesel at 40,000 pounds. [2]
Payload ranges from about 2,415 to 7,900 pounds depending on configuration, and the highest numbers come from gas-powered, dual-rear-wheel F-350 trucks, not diesels. The sticker on the driver's door jamb shows the payload for that exact truck. [3]
Available towing technology includes Pro Trailer Backup Assist™, Pro Trailer Hitch Assist™, Onboard Scales with Smart Hitch to measure bed weight and tongue weight, a Smart Trailer Tow Connector and BLIS® with trailer coverage. [5] If you tell us your trailer's loaded weight and hitch type, our team can match you with Super Duty trucks rated for it.
F-250 vs. F-350 vs. F-450: SRW or DRW?
Single rear wheel (SRW) trucks have one wheel on each side of the rear axle. The F-250 and most F-350s are SRW. They fit a standard garage and parking space more easily, ride better empty and handle everyday driving well. They are the right choice for most bumper-pull trailers, campers and daily work use.
Dual rear wheel (DRW) trucks, or "duallies," have two wheels on each side. They are available on F-350 and standard on F-450, and they add stability and higher ratings for heavy gooseneck and fifth-wheel towing. The tradeoff is width: DRW trucks measure 96 inches across the rear fenders, compared with 80 inches for SRW, which matters on narrow farm lanes and in tight lots.
A practical rule: choose F-250 for most work and towing, F-350 SRW when you need more payload in the bed, and a dually F-350 or F-450 when you regularly pull heavy fifth-wheel or gooseneck trailers.

Ford Super Duty vs. Chevy Silverado HD
For 2027, the comparison is closer than it has been in years. Chevrolet's new 8.3L Duramax diesel out-muscles the Power Stroke® on paper, while the Super Duty keeps the edge in maximum towing and payload and in gas-engine towing. [8]
| 2027 Maximum Available | Ford Super Duty | Chevy Silverado HD |
|---|---|---|
| Diesel horsepower / torque | 500 hp / 1,200 lb.-ft. | 555 hp / 1,230 lb.-ft. |
| Max towing | 40,000 lbs. | 38,000 lbs. |
| Max payload | 7,900 lbs. | 6,990 lbs. |
| Gas horsepower / torque | 420 hp / 445 lb.-ft. | 412 hp / 472 lb.-ft. |
| Max gas towing | 22,500 lbs. | 19,000 lbs. |
In practice, very few buyers use the top number on either truck. What matters is the rating for the configuration you'll buy, the towing technology you want and the dealer who will service it. If you are cross-shopping, bring your trailer weights and we'll show you the Super Duty configurations that cover them.
Which Ford Super Duty Is Right for You?
Start with the trailer. Know your heaviest loaded trailer and whether it uses a bumper-pull, fifth-wheel or gooseneck hitch. That tells you whether an F-250 covers it or whether you need an F-350 dually or F-450.
Then the engine. The 7.3L gas is the value choice and the payload leader. The 6.7L diesel is the choice for heavy, frequent towing and long highway miles loaded.
Then the cab. Regular Cab keeps the truck shortest and lightest. SuperCab adds a small rear seat. Crew Cab seats six comfortably and is the most common choice for work-and-family trucks.
Then the trim. XL and XLT for work, Lariat® for serious towing technology, and King Ranch® or Platinum® for a luxury cabin.
Active and retired military members, first responders and college or trade school students may also qualify for Ford recognition cash toward an eligible new Super Duty. [9]
